Decision details
This site is a 6.07 hectare property located in the City of Thorold, Regional Municipality of Niagara. The facility will blend silicon carbide, used commercially as an abrasive sand, with aluminum fines to produce a valuable additive used in the formulation of cement. Approximately 76,000 tonnes of material are proposed to be blended on Site.
The company blends material such as silicon carbide from the previous Exolon facility in Thorold with aluminum fines, and the mixed product is sold to cement plants as a an additive in powdered cement. There is a limit to the amount of material which can be used by the receiving cement plants per year and as a result, blending activities typically occur for only 3-4 weeks during the year.
