We are proposing to update our Statement of Environmental Values to acknowledge the importance of climate change.
Description of policy
The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation is proposing to update its Statement of Environmental Values to acknowledge the importance of climate change.
The following text is to be added to the Statement of Environmental Values;
The Ministry believes that the public interest requires a broad effort to reduce greenhouse gases and to build a cleaner and more resilient province. The Ministry will continue to involve and engage individuals, businesses, communities, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and Indigenous communities in the ultimate goal of fostering a high-productivity, resilient, low-carbon economy and society in Ontario.
The Ministry understands that climate change may have a greater impact on Indigenous communities. The ministry will consider the unique impacts of climate change on Indigenous communities when reviewing policies and legislation.
Please review the draft Statement of Environmental Values and provide comments to the contact person listed in this notice by the end of the comment period.
Purpose of policy
Ministries that are subject to the Environmental Bill of Rights are required to develop, consult on and follow a Statement of Environmental Values.
The Statement of Environmental Values contains core values on how the ministry will consider the environment when implementing decisions that could significantly affect the environment.
