Bulletin summary

We are planning and conducting our prescribed burns for the 2019 season.

Why consultation isn't required

The purpose of this posting is to provide general notice to the public about prescribed burns that are scheduled to be conducted during 2019. All prescribed burns in Ontario approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry must follow the guidelines provided by the Prescribed Burn Manual dated November 2014.

Bulletin details

Members of the public are invited to submit their written comments by April 30, 2019 to the contact person listed in this notice.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s (MNRF) Prescribed Burning Operations Policy and Manual set out guidelines for planning and conducting prescribed burns in Ontario. For each prescribed burn, an operational plan is prepared in accordance with the complexity of the burn. Each plan includes the following information:

  • Statement of the objectives to be achieved;
  • Burn prescription that will meet the objectives;
  • List of all areas of concern;
  • Description of the methods used to give notice to the public;
  • Description of ignition, suppression, safety and support measures; and
  • An outline of the requirements for a post-burn analysis.

The following prescribed burns are being planned for and are scheduled to be conducted during 2019 (listed by MNRF district/park zone; name; location; size in hectares (ha); purpose; and burn proponent).

Aylmer District

Upper Thames River Conservation Authority- Kanter, Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; Municipality of Thames Centre, 5561 Marion St., Dorchester; size 0.8 ha; enhance and maintain prairie ecosystems; Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.

Upper Thames River Conservation Authority- Innerkip, Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; Township of East Zorra-Tavistock, 715572 Oxford Rd. 4, Innerkip; size 0.9 ha; enhance and maintain prairie ecosystems; Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.

Highway 525 Minaki to Wabaseemoong Travel Corridor Hazard Reduction LC Prescribed Burn; size 49 ha; UTM Zone 15; Base Map 37553. Purpose is removal of cured grass fuels in a frequent fire zone. Proponent is AFFES facilitated by Kenora Fire Management Headquarters.

Sioux Lookout District

Mishkeegogamang Independent First Nation Hazard Reduction Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; UTM Zone 15; Base Map 69566; Size 32 ha, Spring Grass fuel hazard reduction; Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services – Sioux Lookout Fire Management Headquarters.

Lac Seul Forest Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; UTM Zone 15; Base Map 58566; 3 ha. Approximately total area consisting of various decked de-limbed, tree-length piles and also 8-foot log piles. Prescribed Burn objective is to remove identified piles (abandoned as a result of company insolvency whereby harvest operations were incomplete) as completely as possible.Burn tentatively scheduled for late summer. MNRFAFFES – Sioux Lookout District.

Thunder Bay District

Fort William First Nation Hazard Reduction Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; UTM Zone 16; Base Map 33353; Size 22.0 ha; Remove/reduce dead cured grass fuels to reduce wildfire risk to the community; Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services – Thunder Bay Fire Management Headquarters.

Gull Bay First Nation Hazard Reduction Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; UTM Zone 16; Size 10.0 ha. Removal through burning of cured grass fuels from designated areas in the community of Gull Bay First Nation that have annually posed a spring hazard due to human caused fires; Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services – Thunder Bay Fire Management Headquarters.

Hogarth Property Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; UTM Zone 16; Base Map 32537; Size 10 ha. Red Pine understory burn for stand improvement; Lakehead University / AFFES – Thunder Bay District.

Red Lake District

Sandy Lake First Nation Hazard Reduction Low Complexity Prescribed Burn; UTM Zone 15; Base Map 47687; Size 9.31 ha. Removal through burning of cured grass fuels from designated areas in the community of Sandy Lake First Nation that have annually posed a spring hazard due to human caused fires; Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services – Red Lake District.

Wawa District

Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation High Complexity Prescribed Burn; Gourlay Township; UTM Zone 16; Base map 66541; Size 228 ha; Removal of 50-100% of duff, remove 80% of onsite balsalm fir, create suitable microsites for the regeneration of desirable conifer and hardwood species; Proponent: Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation – Hornepayne, Ontario.

North Bay District

Daventry High Complexity Prescribed Burn; Lauder Township; UTM Zone 17; Base Map 67511;Size 20 ha; Silvicultural – burning the site will provide for a good seed bed for the natural regeneration of White Pine. Nipissing Forest Resource Management Inc, and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services – North Bay District.

Bancroft District

Whitefish Lake High Complexity Prescribed Burn; Grimsthorpe Township; UTM 18t; Base Map 3149702; Size 29.1 ha. This burn is a silvicultural site preparation to reduce a dense layer of woody material and expose mineral soil to create conditions favorable for regeneration. Secondly this burn will also provide for further research in the use and cost structure of prescribed burning on the Mazinaw – Lanark Forest as an alternative to herbicide application. Thirdly this burn may allow for staff training and development of AFFES the SFL It may encourage other local land managers to explore the application of fire on the landscape as a viable tool. High Dam Lake High Complexity Prescribed Burn; Ashby Township; UTM 18t; Base Map 3149914; Size 21.4 ha. This burn is a silvicultural site preparation to reduce a dense layer of woody material and expose mineral soil to create conditions favorable for regeneration. Mazinaw – Lanark Forest Inc, and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry - Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services.
