This notice was originally posted in the old Environmental Registry under number PA00E0027.
Description of policy
Small waterworks provide less than 50,000 litres on any given day, do not have the capacity to supply 250,000 litres per day, and serve five or fewer residences. This would include a broad range of establishments that use well or surface water sources such as lakes and rivers for their water supply.
Amall waterworks that offer drinking water to the public might include:
- boarding houses
- small to medium size restaurants
- tourist lodgings
- assembly halls
- churches
- camps and other outdoor recreation facilities
- gas stations
- shopping centres
Small schools, small hospitals, long-term care facilities and day nurseries that have their own waterworks might also be part of this group.

Purpose of policy
The government of Ontario is reviewing the need to develop an approach that would affect the testing and reporting requirements for Ontario's small waterworks.
This notice is posted on the Environmental Registry to solicit comment on environmental protection measures needed for small waterworks in Ontario.
