The Rainy River Mine is located in the Rainy River Mining District in Northwestern Ontario in the township of Chapple. The property is situated approximately 50 km northwest of Fort Frances Ontario, 25 km northwest of Emo and 21 km north of Barwick. The mine is serviced by an all season road west off of Highway 71.

On September 15, 2020 the director made a decision to file the closure plan. The Certified Closure Plan is now considered filed and the proponent must comply with the Closure Plan.
New Gold Inc has submitted a Mine Closure Plan for filing by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines as required under the Mining Act. The following are the major components of this Closure Plan Amendment as proposed by New Gold Inc:
- Updates to tailing management facility layout
- Updates to dam heights and designs
- Updates to water treatment system
- Portal to underground
- Update to Financial Assurance
- General site layout updates
- Updates to waste rock pile design
Effects of consultation
No comment was received through the Environmental Registry of Ontario resulting in no impact on the decision to proceed or not with this proposal.
