Why consultation isn't required
The Environmental Bill of Rights does not require this proposal to be posted on the Environmental Registry. However, we are sharing our Regulatory Registry proposal for a golf cart pilot for information purposes.
Bulletin details
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) recognizes the importance of new or existing vehicle technology, especially if it expands mobility options for Ontarians; however, safety remains a top priority.
The safe integration of new or existing vehicle types with pedestrians and other vehicles is a key consideration before any vehicle type will be allowed on-road.
Although golf carts may resemble low-speed vehicles, they do not meet the safety standards for low-speed vehicles required in the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) and therefore are currently not permitted on Ontario roads.
We are exploring the feasibility of a regulatory and policy framework regarding a pilot for the on-road use of golf carts on Pelee Island and in Huron-Kinloss while promoting road safety and fostering economic growth and tourism in the province.
We are providing this notice to make the public aware that a proposal regarding a pilot for the on-road use of golf carts on Pelee Island and in Huron-Kinloss has been posted on the Regulatory Registry for 30 days for public comment. The public is invited to review and comment on the proposal through the Regulatory Registry. To view the proposal, follow the link provided below.
This bulletin notice is an update to the previously posted bulletin notice: ‘Golf Cart on Pelee Island’ (https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-2743) to include an additional municipality for this pilot project.
