Proposal details

Nelson Aggregate Co. seeks to authorize an amendment to the current site plan to integrate the existing quarry with the proposed Burlington Quarry extension application located in the City of Burlington.

Proposal details

Application has been made by Nelson Aggregate Co. to amend the following details of the site plan to integrate the existing quarry with a proposed extension application:

  • removal of the 15 metre setbacks adjacent to the proposed extraction area in the west extension application
  • adding permissions for material extracted within the extension application to be transported to the existing quarry for processing and shipping
  • a new entrance/exit access ramp adjacent to No. 2 Sideroad to transport material from the south extension into the existing quarry
  • requests for overrides to facilitate integrated operations and rehabilitation between the extension application and existing quarry
  • a revised rehabilitation plan to facilitate cohesive rehabilitation with the proposed quarry extension application, changes to the final end use from a deep lake system to a shallow lake with surrounding lands including an agricultural area (14.5 ha)
  • add noise attenuation recommendations identified in the quarry extension application that relate to the existing quarry

Other Information

Nelson Aggregate Co. operates this site under the authority of licence No. 5499 and No. 5657 pursuant to the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA).  In total 218.3 hectares are currently licensed as a quarry.

Nelson Aggregate Co. has applied for a Class A (Quarry Below Water) licence under the ARA, which is known as the Burlington Quarry extension application. For this application the annual tonnage condition applied for is 2,000,000 tonnes.  If approved, the proponent has requested to integrate the operations of the extension being proposed and existing sites.

Public consultation opportunities

The proposal request for this licence is being circulated within the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. Additionally, notification of this application has been forwarded to the City of Burlington, Halton Region, Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Niagara Escarpment Commission, Conservation Halton, and landowners within 120 metres of the licensed boundary, for comment.
