We have issued a new Environmental Compliance Approval to Peter Kiewit Sons ULC for temporary industrial sewage works for the collection, transmission, treatment and disposal of stormwater runoff, seepage, and excavation water from the dewatering operation to facilitate upstream and downstream concrete repairs at the existing Smokey Falls spillway. The site is located approximately 80 km North of Kapuskasing within the traditional territory of the Taykwa Tagamou Nation and Moose Cree First Nation.

The temporary industrial sewage works consist of the following temporary works:

  • two baker tanks
  • one sedimentation pond

The works will expire on December 31, 2024.

1. Prepare your application

What is considered

The appeal body will consider the following two questions in deciding whether to grant you leave to appeal:

  1. is there is good reason to believe that no reasonable person, with respect to the relevant law and to any government policies developed to guide decisions of that kind, could have made the decision?
  2. could the decision you wish to appeal result in significant harm to the environment?

You’ll need to provide notice to the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks that you’re seeking leave to appeal.

Proposal details

This proposal is for a new Environmental Compliance Approval (industrial sewage) for Peter Kiewit Sons ULC for a sedimentation pond on the Smoky Falls Dam Safety Project, which is location 80 kilometres north of the Town of Kapuskasing, Ontario.

This proposal is for the collection, transmission, treatment and disposal of construction waste water and stormwater run-off. The suspended solids will undergo settling in the Sedimentation Pond prior to their discharge to the Smoky Falls Generating Station Headpond, which is located on the Mattagami River. The effluent from the pond is expected to meet Provincial Water Quality Objectives.
