Decision details

A decision was made on February 8, 2024 to approve, with fourteen (14) modifications, the new Town of Iroquois Falls Official Plan adopted pursuant to sections 17 and 26 of the Planning Act by By-law 3709/23.  Notice of this decision was issued on February 9, 2024 to the Town of Iroquois Falls.

The adopted official plan was reviewed for conformity with the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario, 2011, consistency with the Provincial Policy Statement, 2020, and regard for matters of provincial interest as outlined in Section 2 of the Planning Act.

The fourteen (14) modifications to the official plan have been made to reflect recent changes to the Planning Act affecting site plan control, additional residential units, and parkland dedication, and to address provincial policy direction related to prime agricultural areas, flood plains, habitat of endangered species, and mineral aggregate resources, among other matters.

The new official plan, as approved, outlines a comprehensive framework of new and revised policies addressing matters such as climate change, economic development, housing, and the protection of water resources and natural heritage.  Further, the new official plan expands the settlement area boundary and establishes new land-use designations for an industrial (employment) park and a multi-use waterfront.

Pursuant to subsections 17 (36.5) and (38.1) of the Planning Act, this decision is final and not subject to appeal.  Accordingly, the new Town of Iroquois Falls Official Plan, as approved with modifications by the Minister, came into effect on February 9, 2024.

The new official plan applies to all lands within the Town of Iroquois Falls.

Proposal details

The Council of the Town of Iroquois Falls adopted the proposed official plan on January 16, 2023, by By-law No. 3709. The new official plan will replace the existing plan for the Town of Iroquois Falls which came into effect in 1976. The new plan will provide guidance and direction for development and planning decisions within the Town of Iroquois Falls for the next planning horizon. The proposed official plan will be reviewed for consistency with the Provincial Policy Statement, the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario, and matters of provincial interest as expressed in the Planning Act. This includes the protection of ecological systems, conservation and management of natural resources, supply of affordable housing, provision of employment opportunities and protection of economic well-being, efficient land use, conservation of energy and water, waste management, climate change mitigation and adaptation, among other interests. The proposed official plan is a result of the Town of Iroquois Falls’ review of the official plan currently in effect for the municipality, as required under section 26 of the Planning Act.

The proposed official plan has been forwarded to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing by the Town of Iroquois Falls for a decision. As set out in subsections 17(36.5) and (38.1) of the Planning Act, the decision of the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing regarding an official plan adopted in accordance with section 26 is final and not subject to appeal.
