Proposal details

This proposal is for a renewal and amendment to the Limited Operational Flexibility for Environmental Compliance Approval (air & noise) No. 9741-9QJRXR for Umicore Precious Metals Canada Inc., a precious metal refinery and production facility located in the City of Markham, Ontario.

The emission sources from the manufacturing and associated processes that discharge to the air include:

  • 12 electric induction furnaces,
  • two horizontal concasting machines,
  • two vertical concasting machines,
  • a wet scrubber system, and
  • an assay lab

The amendment includes changes to the production limits of the chemical refining, refining melt, and cold processing operations at the Facility. Emissions to the air from this facility include:

  • cadmium,
  • iron,
  • lead,
  • nitrogen oxides,
  • hydrochloric acid,
  • sulphur dioxide

The Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (air), when issued, permits modifications to the facility subject to limits on operational flexibility that include a production limit for the facility to be specified on the Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (air). The limited operational flexibility conditions have an expiry date. The company will be required to make an application for amendment at that time to renew these conditions.
