Proposal details

The pilot proposal requires an aquaculture licence under section 47 (1)(b) of the FWCA. If approved, 2500 fingerling sized walleye would be held in a cage nursery system that is approximately 10’x10’x10’ in size, starting in July 2026 and are expected to be released in November 2026.  The proponent would need to receive a stocking licence from the Ministry prior to release of the fish into the lake. The strain of walleye used for this pilot project are the same strain of walleye that the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR or ministry) has stocked into Golden Lake in previous stocking efforts. The cage would be located on and above Crown (public) Land in the waters of Golden Lake.  The proponent would need to receive appropriate occupational authority authorizing the cage to be located above the public lands of the lakebed before the cage could be installed. The proposed aquaculture licence includes water quality and sedimentation monitoring requirements as conditions of approval. The holder of the licence would be required to immediately report fish disease agents listed in Schedule C of Ontario Regulation 664/98: Fish Licensing made pursuant to the FWCA
