We introduced Bill 139 - the Building Better Communities and Conserving Watersheds Act, 2017, on May 30, 2017. The changes identified in the bill respond to the province-wide consultation the government undertook as part of the Ontario Municipal Board Review.
We have made regulations and taken related actions to move Ontario to a project list approach under the Environmental Assessment Act. Projects that require a comprehensive environmental assessment are now set out in regulation.

We are proposing five new regulations to implement the new Species Conservation Act and facilitate a registration-first approach while maintaining strong environmental safeguards. This proposal also includes some amendments to the SCA and consequential amendments to other statutes and regulations.

A permit has been issued under Ontario’s Endangered Species Act to NextBridge Infrastructure LP to enable the construction and operation of a new transmission line in northwestern Ontario. This will help meet future energy demand in the region. The permit includes actions to minimize adverse effects and provide overall benefits for species at risk.
