The 2019-20 Annual Report to the Minister of Environment, Conservation, and Parks from the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO) is now available on Ontario.ca. The report includes COSSARO’s assessments and resulting classifications of species in accordance with the Endangered Species Act, 2007.
We are sharing principles to guide policy development of the EPS program to meet the updated federal benchmark for 2023-2030. These principles will inform the development of a future proposal to be finalized by 2023. We are also sharing our latest modelling information which shows Ontario is on track to meet its 2030 emissions reduction target.

We have expanded the boundaries of 20 protected areas (11 provincial parks and 9 conservation reserves) and created 10 new protected areas (2 provincial parks and 8 conservation reserves). These changes provide increased opportunities for recreational activities and contribute to the long-term sustainability of Ontario’s natural heritage.
We are proposing amendments to the Environmental Assessment Act through the proposed Protecting Ontario’s Workers and Economic Resilience Act, 2026. These changes would improve the comprehensive environmental assessment process by removing certain steps while maintaining strong environmental protections and other opportunities for consultation.
We have approved the three regulated manuals under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act (CFSA). The revisions align with the Sustainable Growth: Ontario’s Forest Sector Strategy and modernize the forest management planning and wood measurement processes while continuing to provide for the sustainability of Ontario’s forests.

Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act, received Royal Assent on November 28, 2022. The Act amends the Ontario Heritage Act (OHA) and its regulations to reduce red tape and remove barriers that are slowing down housing construction and other priority projects while continuing to conserve heritage properties that matter most to local communities.
We have made regulations and taken related actions to move Ontario to a project list approach under the Environmental Assessment Act. Projects that require a comprehensive environmental assessment are now set out in regulation.
