As it takes hundreds to thousands of years for carbon to be permentatly stored in geologic formations I am concerned about monitoring requirements which may only last 10 to 50 years after closure. I believe this should be longer. As carbon storage encourages greater use of fossil fuels I do not feel that any depth will encourage public confidence in carbon storage as down stream emissions are not addressed. Deeper storage is better than shallow storage. Indigenous Nations should have free prior and informed consent for any storage project on their Nation. In terms of transferring responsibility for monitoring I like Stewardship fees that would pay for long term monitoring for each site as well as abandoned sites. This fee should be ongoing and implemented with other long term policies.
