Given the clear and alarming report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released yesterday, I am disturbed (to put it rather mildly) by Bill 4 which has been tabled in the Ontario legislature. It is imperative on all of us, but especially governments and their agencies, to do whatever can be done to engage in efforts to lessen the effect of human endeavours on climate change. For the past half century I have studied (professionally) the relationship between environment and human society since the beginning of the Holocene 12,000 years ago, and it is abundantly clear to me and to my colleagues that: (a) our reliance on fossil fuels for energy has resulted in the current situation, and (b) that if we act NOW, there is still time to prevent the impending catastrophe. But we cannot delay, we must act now! Passage of Bill 4 will be a appalling mistake!
