I am writing to urge the Government of Ontario to withdraw Bill 4, The Cap and Trade Cancellation Act.
Climate change is a serious threat to economic security, environmental integrity and public health in our great Province of Ontario.
I am very concerned about the future that awaits our descendents just a few generations away.
I believe that with a concerted effort and a commitment to clean renewable energy and conservation programs we can achieve our goal of preventing climate catastrophe and we can leave a better world for our grandchildren. I believe we can afford this transition using funds collected through a new improved Cap and Trade program even more effective than the one put in place by the past Liberal government.
The transition toward a clean renewable energy economy is a perfect way to create reliable employment and sustainable communities. I urge the government not to cancel wind farms and other renewable energy projects which are so important to getting climate change under control
I fully support putting a price on carbon that provides strong incentive to reduce emissions. I also support restrictive hard limits on carbon emissions. .
Current funds that have accumulated in the existing Cap and Trade program must be used as originally intended, for the abatement of carbon emissions.
I have read the recommendations made by the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario and I find those very comprehensive and appropriate. My only caveat is to clarify that I do not support nuclear power as a way to shift away from fossil fuels.
Nuclear power is not sustainable and degrades our economic, environmental and public health in countless ways. Quite frankly, the Province could purchase lower cost hydro from Quebec and eliminate the need to rebuild the Darlington nuclear reactors and the province could shutdown the dangerously old reactors at Pickering.
It is very interesting to me that the U.K. Climate Change Act involves a 12 year plan. Coincidentally this week the United Nations issued a report warning that inside the next 12 years we must take serious action if we are to prevent widespread catastrophic effects of climate change. It is foolhardy to cancel Ontario’s Cap and Trade program without replacing it with an even better more strict program to put an end our deadly habit of dumping carbon into the atmosphere.
