The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives. Many politicians and business spokes-persons hide behind this, defending their perspective on climate change as normal evolution.
The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is > 95% probability that it is the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.
This week's devastating IPCC report has brought the impending impacts of climate change, and just how far we are from meeting our goals to stop them, into crisp focus. We have to stop pretending that cutting emissions is optional. It is going to have to happen. We can't afford not to cut them. The Ontario government, and all other Provincial governments, cannot ignore the situation. They and many older citizens are sticking their head in the sand and ignoring the problem, leaving the consequences for our children and grand-children. By then it will be too late to remedy. We must collectively take action NOW so DO NOT LET Ontario or any other Provincial Governments abdicate their involvement.
