I was born and raised in a northern Ontario mining town, where I saw firsthand the devastating effects of putting industry before the environment.
As a planet, we are now at a crossroad we cannot ignore or minimize if we want our children and their children to know the benefits of a natural environment with abundant plant and animal diversity not continually threatened by horrific forest fires, and unending water and weather extremes.
As today's letter from the Green Party to the Ministry of the Environment stated so succinctly:
Bill 4 fails to match the urgency of the climate crisis and represents a major step backward.
Bill 4 ignores the urgency of climate change
Bill 4 closes Ontario for business to the clean economy
Bill 4 gives little detail about a replacement plan
Bill 4 does not contain binding emissions targets
Bill 4 eliminates the most important policy tool: pollution pricing
For this reason, I support the Green Party's recommendations for a credible climate plan:
Adopt carbon fee and dividend
Focus on energy efficiency in homes and buildings
Electrify our transportation system
Support jobs and investment in the clean economy
Make our electricity system clean, affordable, and community-owned
Prepare Ontario for climate impacts.
We need to reject Bill 4 and get serious about protecting our climate.
