Revoking the Cap and Trade program is a serious mistake which will make an already dangerous climate future even worse. The existing program is specifically designed to avoid a negative economic impact on Ontario citizens while at the same time making it sensible for businesses to significantly cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions. Other jurisdictions (California, British Columbia, etc.) which already have some form of Cap and Trade in place are showing above average economic performance while at the same time significantly lowering their CO2 footprint.
Monday's report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which reflects the overwhelming scientific consensus, warns that there is barely ten years left to head off the very worst of the global warming we are already facing. We must take large steps immediately to keep the negative climate outcomes limited to something survivable. We are facing an emergency. Cancelling Cap and Trade is the exact opposite of what this province needs to do.
