Please read the summary of the IPCC report before voting on this bill. I understand that what is at stake is incomprehensible and it is easier to dismiss the facts rather than grapple with the harsh reality of climate change, both present and future. My generation, the “millennial generation” and every generation afterwards will have to live with the effect of decisions that are made now.
Cancelling the cap and trade system introduces foolish and unnecessary instability into the market. Companies that have adapted their businesses under this program will be penalized. Emerging industries that will provide the foundation of a “green economy” (the economy of the future) will be devastated and unable to recover. To make matters worse Doug Ford has no intention to replace cap and trade with any credible solution
The cap and trade system is not perfect but no system will be. Transitioning to a green economy and reducing our emissions to meet the targets needed to mitigate catastrophic climate change requires nothing short of a complete transformation of how our society is organized. It requires taking many of the actions that are currently being funded by the cap and trade system (subsidies for electric vehicles, investment in infrastructure to improve energy efficiency and providing financial incentives to companies to reduce their emissions).
I have to wonder, if you vote to repeal cap and trade, are you doing so because you are in denial of the vast and devastating economic, health and social impacts of climate change ? Or do you just not care?
