I support the new electric arc furnace but Algoma Steel should be able to use new technologies in order to meet the air and noise pollution levels that are in place now.
Algoma Steel should especially NOT be allowed air pollution exemptions from the Ministry of the Environment in respect to air emissions for two substances, benzene and benzo(a)pyrene.
The Soo is noted to have high cancer rates as it is, compared to other cities without big industries.
Our health care is underfunded and health care workers are demoralized so I would not want to take the chance of increasing cancer rates in the Soo.
I used to live on Prentice Avenue and remember certain black particles that used to accumulate on top of our vehicles 35 years ago.
I'm curious if there has been studies on cancer rates in the Soo compared to to where you lived by the steel mill.
Being that our prevailing wind is north, northwest, I wonder what the cancer rates are in Soo Michigan.
I support the new technology changes that Algoma Steel is making with their electric arc furnace, but believe they shouldn't get any air or noise pollution exemptions. They should be able to meet the Ministry of the Environment air emissions as written, putting in new technology to decrease their air emissions.
Thank you
