Smell - Often - Like a poorly burnt fuel.
Particulate matter - Frequent / Constant - Every home in Bayview is covered in a black/orange soot.
Since the project began, it seems that the smell and particulate matter are worse than in living memory, which for many goes back to the 50s and 60s, it is hard to believe that it could be worse than then, all the same it certainly seems worse.
The two common beliefs are that:
A) While the transition is on, everything that is being replaced is being run into the ground with little concern for residents/ environment.
B) The emissions are affecting people's health; several lung cancer patients on McAllen, Spadina and Glasgow Avenues. Likely more on Pittsburgh and on the other side of Goulais Ave.
With Algoma expecting to have a significant reduction of input costs (Scrap Metal and Electricity) to as little as 20% of current retail; in addition to senior management with salaries that are already averaging well over $1.5 million and employees seeing significant increases in their profit sharing. It begs the question, what dividend is going to be provided to the residents of Sault Ste. Marie, particularly in neighbourhoods that are most affected.
Thank you.
