I am appalled at the proposed cancellation of the 'cap and trade' framework, which among other things sets a price on carbon, thereby incentivizing more efficient and lower carbon energy use. Unless we collectively reduce our Greenhouse Gas emissions the impact on global warming and consequent catastrophe will be unavoidable.
There is no magic single button to deal with this challenge, but removing this mechanism without any replacement, and forgoing the associated revenues which were and should further be used to support our transition to low carbon economy, is shortsighted and irresponsible.
Where is the cost estimate of proceeding with cancellation of the cap and trade program?
More important, what signal is this cancellation sending to all those, the majority, who want to see action urgently to deal with the warming planet, melting glaciers, and impending catastrophe?
The economist William Nordhaus recently awarded the Nobel Prize for his work evaluating the dynamics of global warming has confirmed that the best way to change market behaviour was with a high price on carbon.
This bill is against the public interest, will perpetuate continued climate change denial, and ensure that we leave our children to face civilization collapse.
