I writing to oppose Bill 4, Cap and Trade Cancellation Act, 2018.

Mitigation of climate change is urgent, as exemplified in the UN report released this week. Time is extremely limited. While Cap and Trade is not the only mechanism, it is much better than that proposed to take its place, for which very little has been said. Survival of the planet is at stake, and we cannot afford to have a gap without any effective strategy. Money is not the issue, and saving money for the government or taxpayers should not be a consideration. The economic fallout of cancelling the Cap and Trade program would be severe, and as it partners with other jurisdications would also negatively affect the reputation of Ontario. It is very important to reduce creation of pollution, and capping its production and making those polluting pay is an effective mechanism that should not be cancelled.
