I am against for-profit water bottling. Bottled water giants have shown that they cannot be trusted to act responsibly. Their operations threaten the prosperity of the communities they take their water from, giving virtually nothing back. We need to stop thinking of our water as a commodity, and start treating it as a right from which we all benefit equally.
Extending the moratorium on bottling permits by a year isn't enough. I say extend the moratorium indefinitely. No new bottling permits, unless the water is going to be provided for free to communities around the world that are lacking. If Nestlé wants to tap in to our ground water—or anybody's water—let them do it solely for the benefit of those in need. And let them foot the bill for any expenses incurred.
