As a wildlife biologist and a resident of southern Ontario I am deeply concerned with the the proposed act, and what it means for our remaining biodiversity. At a time when the effects of climate change are becoming ever more tangible, I would like to see our government becoming more thoughtful and precautious in their development, not proposing bills that will remove any environmental checks for the development a new highway of questionable value through our farmland and greenbelt. We know that there is sensitive habitat along the proposed route, as demonstrated by the observations of endangered redside dace in waterways in the area. This occupancy should be triggering efforts to look for alternatives, not ways to circumvent environmental regulations. The proposed act is shortsighted, self-serving, and environmentally irresponsible, and I am wholly opposed to it.
