I am a councillor with the Township of Rideau Lakes. We have twice had proposals for battery storage facilities, BESS, and both times the proposals were turned down in a 5-4 vote. A voting bloc of 5 banded together to support one of the 5 who lives very near one of the sites. Based on the opposition of ONE councillor, the township has lost out on perhaps being awarded one or two BESS facilities which would have been situated adjacent to large solar installations. The majority of the public were in favour of the BESS proposals.
The Ontario government has given too much power to municipalities to decide the future of battery storage electrical supply. I would like to see a provincial directive. Others here in RL feel the same way.
