Comment
Concerned Citizens of King Township submitted comments on the related application for a Permit to take water by St. Rita of Marylake posted in September 2024. In addition to those comments, which we understand will be carried forward in this proposal for a Permit to take water, we submit the following.
We understand that this proposal is seeking a permit to take water from a well up to 115,000 L per day. We also understand that the site for this well may be adjacent to Mary Lake, a kettle lake in a Natural Core Area of the Oak Ridges Moraine. What will be the impacts on the groundwater levels and the water levels of Mary Lake and the surrounding wetlands? Has an assessment been carried out looking at the long term impacts?
Biologist Mark Heaton has verified in the attached Affidavit that 10 fish species have been identified in Mary Lake by MNR in earlier assessments. Have any recent aquatic assessments been carried out?
We note that this new proposal for water taking is a Category 3, and carries a high risk of harm to the natural environment. CCKT is advocating to have the highest protections in place for this sensitive watershed area and natural heritage area.
Thank you for receiving our comments.
J. Bruce Craig, Chair, Concerned Citizens of King Township.
