I am concerned about the disposal of waste sewage on a property adjacent to Shepard Lake. Human sewage runoff could easily leach bacteria into this lake, and contaminate the soils, lake water and local ground water with heavy metals and chemicals from drugs taken by humans and cleaning products. All of these chemicals and heavy metals do not break down in a natural compost process. These chemicals and heavy metals contaminate the local soils and run off in rain water and melt water into our ground water and Shepard Lake. Shepard Lake has a number of homes and cottages on it's shores. Many people use this lake for recreational activities including fishing, and swimming. There does not seem to be a requirement to monitor the levels of bacteria, chemicals and heavy metals that enter Shepard Lake. At minimum, there should be background level testing completed of Shepard Lake waters and frequent follow up testing post waste disposal to determine the effects on this lake ecosystem. In addition, many homes surrounding Shepard Lake use wells as their primary water supply. Testing of well water should be completed to ensure these wells are not becoming contaminated with bacteria, chemicals and heavy metals.
