I am writing to strongly oppose the air emissions proposals submitted by AV Terrace Bay Inc., specifically the amendment to include sulfur dioxide emissions under the Pulp and Paper – Industry Standard and the renewal of the Environmental Compliance Approval for air and noise.
AV Terrace Bay has a documented history of exceeding air emissions limits when operational, contributing significantly to local air pollution and raising public health concerns. This pattern of non-compliance undermines any confidence in the company’s ability or willingness to adhere to environmental regulations. Worse yet, the company is reportedly no longer operational, meaning it is neither contributing to the local economy nor fulfilling its obligations to the community.
Granting an amendment and renewal to a defunct operation with a track record of violations is not only unnecessary but also irresponsible. Such actions set a dangerous precedent, allowing companies to maintain regulatory permissions despite their history of environmental harm and economic abandonment. It raises serious questions about the Ministry’s commitment to protecting air quality and holding companies accountable.
The local community deserves better than to bear the legacy of a facility known for its environmental mismanagement. The Ministry must thoroughly evaluate whether supporting inactive facilities with poor compliance histories aligns with its mission to safeguard the environment and public health. I urge you to deny these proposals outright.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that the Ministry will prioritize the well-being of the community over preserving the interests of an inactive and historically non-compliant facility.
