I am firmly opposed to this proposed legislation, which threatens to dismantle critical protections for endangered species and sensitive ecosystems across Ontario. Equally concerning is the blatant disregard for the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples. This bill reflects a troubling failure of responsible and ethical governance.
Rather than addressing the urgent environmental challenges we face, this legislation undermines evidence-based conservation work and violates both Canadian legal obligations and international commitments under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Any policy that impacts land, water, and ecosystems must be developed through transparent processes and in full collaboration with Indigenous Nations and affected communities. This bill falls far short of that standard.
I strongly urge the government to withdraw this legislation and commit to meaningful, good-faith consultation with Indigenous leaders, scientists, environmental experts, and the public. The preservation of endangered species and the integrity of our natural heritage is not optional.
