Our ecosystems are vital to continuing to support humans and life on this planet. Our politicians need to start prioritizing the environment, and stop acting like it’s something that can be tossed in the trash. There are huge repercussions when we stop listening to indigenous knowledge and scientists who know better. Our housing crisis will not be fixed by building more homes that are still not affordable. Our transport will not improve by building more highways and tunnels; they will just get congested as well. We need bullet trains, and more public transport options. Investing in public transport will be less costly than an underground tunnel, will bring more money to the province when citizens use it, and it will take up less space to transport more people (requiring less green space to be sacrificed). It takes a real cold hearted person to plough through the habits of endangered species, when we know there are better options. The current system is in place so that other options are explored, and the proposed option is carried out with the least amount of damage to the environment as possible. At the very least, we owe the species affected the time it takes to think about these decisions which will further encroach on their habitats. One health, we’re all in an ecosystem together, and although some humans think so, the human race cannot survive on a planet full of concrete.
