This is an extremely disappointing proposal, and I’m shocked it’s even being considered. Around the world Canada is known as a green country, who respects and protects nature and its wildlife. Housing and infrastructure are of course important, and there is no denying that, however our natural processes and wild spaces should always be at the forefront of these decisions. I don’t understand why the importance of these two things is so difficult to comprehend. Maybe we shouldn’t elect officials without some level of environmental education? Just a thought.
I’ve worked with biologists as a conservation biology technician studying bats for the last two summer seasons and there is no denying that the majority of the species of bats in Ontario are in serious trouble. Humans continue to destroy sensitive ecosystems such as wetlands, grasslands, and hardwood forests for the purpose of “making a buck”. What they don’t realize is these ecosystems sustain bats, among other sensitive wildlife, who in turn protect humans from disease and other harmful viruses. This is a highly intelligent and social mammal, whose misconceptions have put their health and survival on the back burners for policy decision making. Noticed an increase in mosquito levels over the past years? Noticed more harmful pest control sprays being used to in your neighbourhoods? Have you ever wondered what these sprays will do to our environment and our health in the long run? Everything adds up and everything has consequences.
This proposal will no doubt destroy many unique and sensitive ecosystems and habitat in Ontario, and I, as a Conservation Biology Technician and a Fly Fishing Guide, strongly oppose the changes to the endangered species act. There is no redo button, or “I’ve changed my mind” moments once the damage is done. Our greed as a species is become beyond disgusting, and having it corrupt our political processes, political decision making, and our critical thinking makes Ontario and Canada as a whole look terrible on the global stage. It needs to stop before it’s too late.
