The absolute disregard that the government of Ontario has for the health and welfare of the immediate and surrounding community is unacceptable.
Be assured, that any foreseeable damages to the health, life, lifestyle, and property of each and every person will be the responsibility of the provincial government in general. All for a landfill being expanded but only when the proper Environmental Site assessments and laws are followed, bypassing the legal and proper procedures is a great way to risk the health of the public and our environment.
I think an environmental site assessments need to be done before proceeding with the expansion. The waste will be stored at a site located within a kilometer from town on land that sits adjacent to Molly’s Creek, a naturally fed spring-origin creek that flows directly into the Sydenham River. The Sydenham is a well known biological hotspot home to at least 33 species that are currently at risk. There is a high likelihood that toxic substances and chemicals from the dump could leach into Molly’s Creek and transfer to the Sydenham. This would contaminate critical habitats and threaten some of Ontario’s rarest species like the Eastern spiny softshell turtle and Salamander mussel, pushing them closer towards the brink of extinction.
The knowledge from the community on the former property owners conviction for offences included leachate running off the property. The history of the property shows there is potentially harm due to leachate running off the property so expanding the dump without environmental site assessment shows how this company and the provincial government does not seem to care about public health or the health of our environment.
