I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the creation of the Species Conservation Act, 2025 (ERO 025-0380). While streamlining approvals is important, this proposal will seriously weaken Ontario’s ability to protect species at risk.

Moving to a registration-first model will remove critical oversight and allow harmful activities to proceed without proper review. Narrowing the definition of “habitat” will leave many vital areas unprotected, guaranteeing further habitat loss.

Giving the government discretion over listing and delisting species will open the door to political interference and undermine science-based decisions. Eliminating mandatory recovery strategies and advisory bodies will reduce transparency, weaken accountability, and stall meaningful recovery efforts.

If Ontario is serious about balancing development with conservation, the solution is not to dismantle core protections. The solution is to invest in faster scientific assessments, stronger enforcement, and real conservation partnerships that do not sacrifice the future of our wildlife for short-term convenience.

Ontario’s biodiversity is not expendable. I urge the Ministry to withdraw this proposal and put forward a plan that truly protects the species and ecosystems that future generations depend on.
