I am writing to express my complete and unequivocal opposition to the proposed repeal of Ontario’s Endangered Species Act under Bill 5, "Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act." This proposal is reckless, irresponsible, and a catastrophic failure of leadership.
If you weaken protections for endangered species and their habitats in the name of "building faster," you are not strengthening Ontario. You are destroying it. Without thriving ecosystems, there is no economy, no resilience, and no future. These ecosystems are not obstacles to development. They are the living systems that make life, industry, and survival possible.
Specifically:
-Weakening habitat protections will accelerate ecosystem collapse and threaten already vulnerable species.
-Politicizing decisions that should be based on science is a blatant rejection of truth, expertise, and the public interest.
-Eliminating recovery strategies abandons any pretense of responsible stewardship.
-Allowing developers to bypass environmental assessments shows a dangerous disregard for the balance that sustains this province.
This plan does not represent progress. It represents willful environmental destruction disguised as economic development. It trades short-term profits for long-term disaster.
Ontario needs leadership that understands conservation is not a luxury. It is the foundation for a healthy, thriving society. I demand that you halt the repeal of the Endangered Species Act immediately and reaffirm Ontario’s commitment to protecting its biodiversity and future generations.
The people of Ontario are watching. History will judge this moment. Make the right decision.
