I am writing to note my concern and strong diasagreement with the proposed changes to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act regarding public notice for environmental assessment. As an architect, I understand the criticality of working in the best interest of the public - it is the key mandate for all construction projects in Ontario above cost, complexity, or corporate profitability. The proposed changes completely eliminate minimum requirements for public consultation under Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights - a decision that is punitive and untrustworthy given the previous public reaction to the projects dumping raw sewage into the West Island Channel. This public has the right to be informed on the scope of this project and to advocate for environmental protections, as the work is reliant on our tax dollars and has the potential to destroy valuable common space on the waterfront. The proposed changes set a dangerous precedent allowing public projects that do not seek to contribute to the public good, and I strongly oppose the proposed amendment. Therefore, I call upon the Ontario Government to remove Schedule 8 of the new Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025.
