I am writing to share my thoughts on the proposed amendments to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023, particularly Schedule 8 of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025.
I respectfully express my concern regarding the provision in Schedule 8 that would exempt all projects related to the Ontario Place redevelopment—including those not located directly on the site—from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993. This part of the legislation ensures a minimum standard of public participation in decisions that affect our environment. Removing these safeguards would prevent Ontarians from being informed about, or having a voice in, environmentally significant decisions tied to Ontario Place.
Public input is a cornerstone of good governance and environmental stewardship. Removing these rights in favor of private sector interests not only undermines public trust, but also risks compromising the long-term well-being of our shared natural environment. The continued disregard fit the safeguards legislated into place makes a mockery of the role of government and the intelligence of the public.
I sincerely urge the Government of Ontario to reconsider and remove Schedule 8 from the proposed legislation. Ensuring transparency and public engagement in matters that affect our environment is not just good policy—it is essential for a healthy and democratic Ontario.
Thank you for holding the highest level bar to protect our environment and healthy future.
