At a time when biodiversity is declining globally and habitat protections are the last line of defence, loosening restrictions for conservation to push through development is incredibly short-sighted and self-serving. The need for increased development in the wake of the threats imposed by the United States is understood; however, this can be an opportunity to be a leader in sustainable development while protecting species at risk. Protections have continued to be loosened under this government, and this is a giant misstep. Ontarians showed how they cherish their environment with the opposition to the Greenbelt development; this should have been a signal to this government of what Ontarians value. Protecting habitats is crucial in protecting species at risk. When we degrade even small amounts of habitat, it can push a species to the brink. Science should be guiding these decisions, not dollar signs. We could be leaders in innovation for sustainable development in this country, protecting critical habitat for future generations. Unchecked development should not take that away from all Ontarians. We see what happens when companies are not held accountable, and taxpayers are left with the bill to clean up and restore. We once boasted some of the strongest protections for species in the country. This shouldn't be seen as red tape to be slashed through; it should be a beacon of pride that pushes us to do better. I hope this government upholds the Endangered Species Act as you represent all Ontarians, not just those who will benefit from resource extraction and development.
