I am vigorously opposed to Schedule 8 of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, exempting every project tied to the Ontario Place redevelopment (and any enterprise or activity that furthers the Ontario Place Redevelopment Project that is not at the Ontario Place site) from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993. There is absolutely no justification for this exemption. In fact, environmental site damage has already occurred that should not have if there had been proper oversight and regulations had been followed.
We need Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights which specifically outlines “minimum levels of public participation that must be met before the Government of Ontario makes decisions on certain kinds of environmentally significant proposals for policies, Acts, regulations and instruments.” Schedule 8 will eliminate the needed public participation, and the duty to inform the public about environmentally significant activities, specifically with regard to Ontario Place. Our tax dollars are being used for this ill advised 'redevelopment' of Ontario Place and it is still on public lands thus we are entitled to participate and be informed.
I call on the Government of Ontario to remove Schedule 8 of the new Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025. As noted above the proposed amendment is not in the public interest nor is the redevelopment of Ontario Place in its current iteration.
