The Ontario government's proposal to weaken species-at-risk protections is deeply alarming and will remove safeguards for critical habitats in favour of short-term development gains. Once removed from the landscape, these habitats and the populations they support cannot be replaced. Choosing to open up ecologically sensitive areas for development rather than directing growth to already suitable lands shows a troubling lack of foresight and a fundamentally flawed approach to panning that puts irreplaceable natural heritage features at risk for temporary economic gain. We expect more intelligent and thoughtful planning from our government, who we have entrusted to safeguard natural heritage for future generations.
