The existence of tariff threat should not be deemed as a sufficient reason for bypassing critical environmental safety regulations. The current administration of the United States will only remain in power for a finite length of time, whereas the potential negative impacts of a landfill expansion without environmental assessments can go on for generations to come.
It is well known that the site is located in an area which is home to many species at risk. It is also well known that even the most diligent companies experience the release of pollutants to the environment. This happens so frequently that the Government of Canada has developed an online inventory documenting these releases (https://pollution-waste.canada.ca/national-release-inventory/).
A landfill expansion is a serious undertaking and I cannot begin to express how irresponsible it is that a First World nation, which is known for its environmental standards, would consider omitting the EA process.
