I am not in support of these changes.
I am concerned that the new definitions of habitat and protected areas for certain species will be interpreted narrowly, resulting in less caution when considering areas of interest. Ontario is a massive land mass, and there is no need to remove safeguards already in place that assess vulnerable habitats.
There does not appear to be any requirement for a recovery strategy, management plan, response statement and review of progress for those listed in the Ontario’s Endangered Species Act.
What responsibility, if any, does the government intend to take for these endangered species? Our environment is precious, and more species are added to the list each year. This trend will not stop unless there is action taken. Silence and inaction are unacceptable.
There are comments that this bill will alleviate overlap between federal and provincial legislation. Our governments should work together to ensure these species and their environments are protected.
This appears to be a short-sighted bill, designed for profits in the guise of efficiency and economy, at the expense of nature including us humans. Our species well being depends on our environment, including those species native to the land.
