Focusing only on species' dwelling and not the areas where they are likely to live threatens their survival.
Expectation of voluntary, rather than legislated compliance has been shown time and time again to fail as self-regulation leads to environmental and conservation disaster.
Ability for the government to supercede the expert judgement of COSSARO in adding/removing species from endangered list hints at authoritarian and ideology-based approach rather than being led by science.
This change brings into stark doubt whether the government is acting as a responsible steward of the environment and is not being led by the financial interests of the developers instead. Given the controversy of the Greenbelt scandal - I urge the government to reconsider changes being made.
