I am opposed to the proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act 2007 and the proposal for the Species Conservation Act 2025. I am a property owner on Loon Call Lake in North Kawartha, located in the North Kawartha Signature Site Provincial Park. Many endangered species including the five line skink and the Blandings turtle inhabit this area. I am currently the lake representative for Birds Canada and involved annually in the Common Loon survey data collection. Common loon populations are currently stable in Ontario, however there has been a notable decline in reproductive success in addition to a steady decline in population size over the years. (Tozer ., et al) 2013, Jan 9, 2021.)
The proposed changes to the Endangered Species do not drive species protection or conservation. The proposed Conservation Act 2025 relies on voluntary initiatives. This is clearly not enough. Mandatory environment protection is needed for our fragile animal populations in Ontario.
The new Act gives the Government of Ontario the power to remove protected species from the endangered species list without scientific evidence, undermining the work of the Committee on the Status of Species at risk in Ontario, COSSARO. Why would the current Government want to wind down authority and funding for this Species conservation agency at this critical point in time when global warming is causing habitat destruction from forest fires and flooding?
Please take my concerns into consideration. Thank you.
