The protection and conservation of species at risk is the responsibility of every citizen of the planet. This is infinitely more important than delays and costs for housing, transit, and critical infrastructure. The Ford government has already gutted the Endangered Species Act during their first term in office along with taking away the powers of the Conservation Authority and getting rid of our Environmental Commissioner. Never mind trying to sell of the Green Belt to the highest bidder. Ford is the single most detrimental force for the environment that this province has ever seen. He will stop at nothing to benefit his rich developer friends and pave over the province.
As noted by the well-known conservation charity Ontario Nature, "Bulldozing endangered species protections is only going to unleash more problems in the long run. Healthy forests and waters sustain all Ontarians, not just endangered species. A handful of developers will rake in short-term profits, leaving the bill for the rest of us. We all rely on a healthy environment for the air we breathe and the water we drink."
Building strong economies and more affordable housing can and should be done in harmony with nature. We need to stop this proposal before it causes irreversible damage, and we lose what is most important.
