As someone with a Master’s degree in Biology and Environmental Science, and with over a decade of experience in conservation - from working with the Ontario provincial government and the Field Museum of Natural History, to supporting grassroots non-profits - I’ve seen firsthand the dedication, expertise, and heart that drive provincial species-at-risk programs across Canada.
Today, in my role as a Sustainability Specialist with Viresco Solutions, I work with companies, NGOs, and governments to design and implement sustainability strategies. A growing number of organizations are recognizing what science and Indigenous knowledge systems have long made clear: a net-zero and nature positive future is the only one in which we all can thrive. Biodiversity and climate goals are inseparable - and the Endangered Species Act is one of the few policy tools we have to protect species and ecosystems before we surpass critical planetary tipping points.
Canada has made bold international commitments, including protecting 30% of our lands and waters by 2030. Weakening the Endangered Species Act would directly contradict those goals and send the wrong signal at a time when global momentum is finally coalescing around biodiversity protection. The window for meaningful action is narrowing, and the consequences of delay are irreversible.
We need to strengthen, not stall, our efforts to protect nature. Future generations are counting on us to act with urgency and integrity.
