Last fall, Premier Doug Ford and our local MPP Steve Pinsonneault assured the people of Chatham-Kent that the Municipality would have the final say on whether the Dresden dump expansion would move forward. That promise gave our residents a sense of reassurance that local voices would matter. But by embedding a provision in Bill 5 to remove the requirement for a full Environmental Assessment, the provincial government has gone back on its word. This move strips our Municipality of its ability to fully assess and oppose this project, as it had planned to do through the EA process. Trust in government depends on keeping promises, and right now, our community is being told one thing while legislation says another. The EA must move forward—not only to protect the environment, but to restore integrity and accountability in decision-making.
