Ontario is a beautiful natural and healthy place to live work and play. Many tourist come here to see spend time in our natural areas (lakes, beaches, forests, wine regions, etc.). Climate change in addition increased expansion of residential and commercial areas is already resulting in lost of natural areas and putting increase stress on many at risk species. Removing the check and balance system that ensure site developers follow specific requirements to protect our natural areas (wetland, bodies of water, forests, etc.) is a step backwards in an important area that helps to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure that we have natural areas and wildlife for many future generations to enjoy. It is of critical importance all developers require a checked permit and inspectors are ensuring that laws are being followed to protect our ecosystems.
Having exempt economic areas that do not have to comply with municipal and provincial law is completely unacceptable. No one is above the law. Everyone needs to be held to the same standard and ensure that land uses (new, existing and future plans) are not adversely affecting the environment or human health. Removing the ability for municipal and provincial regulators to have oversight over certain areas is unjust and unacceptable.
