I strongly oppose the proposed Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, particularly the amendments to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023 that would exempt the Ontario Place redevelopment project from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993. This is a blatant removal of public oversight and an alarming step away from transparency and democratic participation in environmental decision-making.
The Environmental Bill of Rights was enacted to protect the public’s right to be informed and to participate in decisions that affect our environment. Exempting Ontario Place from these requirements undermines the very foundation of environmental accountability and sets a dangerous precedent for future developments.
This proposal would strip the public of their legal right to comment on significant projects that could have lasting environmental impacts — not just at the Ontario Place site, but for any related developments. It effectively silences community voices and hands over control to the provincial government without proper checks and balances.
Moreover, granting broad regulation-making authority behind closed doors further erodes public trust and accountability. The government should not be allowed to bypass laws that were put in place to ensure transparency and protect the environment in the name of economic convenience.
I urge decision-makers to reconsider this deeply undemocratic approach and continue full public participation rights.
